Traditional Indian Measurement System (पारंपरिक भारतीय मापन प्रणाली)

India has a rich history of measurement systems that vary across regions. These traditional units are still used in many parts of the country, especially in rural areas and for land measurement.

Length Measurements (लंबाई माप)

  • Angul (अंगुल) - Approximately 3/4 inch, based on finger width
  • Haath (हाथ) - About 18 inches, measured from elbow to tip of middle finger
  • Gaz (गज) - Yard equivalent, typically 36 inches but varies regionally
  • Kos (कोस) - Traditional distance measure, about 2-3 miles

Weight Measurements (वजन माप)

Unit (इकाई) Equivalent Metric Equivalent
Ratti (रत्ती) 8 Ratti = 1 Masha Approx. 0.1215 grams
Tola (तोला) 12 Masha = 1 Tola Approx. 11.66 grams
Chhatank (छटांक) 5 Tola = 1 Chhatank Approx. 58.32 grams
Ser (सेर) 16 Chhatank = 1 Ser Approx. 933.1 grams
Maund (मन) 40 Ser = 1 Maund Approx. 37.324 kg

Land Area Measurements (भूमि क्षेत्र माप)

Indian land measurement units vary significantly by region. Here are some common ones:

  • Bigha (बीघा) - Varies from 1,500 to 6,771 sq.m. depending on state
  • Biswa (बिस्वा) - 1/20 of a Bigha in North India
  • Gunta (गुंठा) - Used in South India, approx. 1,089 sq.ft.
  • Kanal (कनाल) - Used in North India, approx. 5,445 sq.ft.
  • Acre (एकड़) - Standardized to 4,840 sq.yd or 4,046.86 sq.m

Volume Measurements (आयतन माप)

Traditional volume measurements were often used for grains and liquids:

  • Pathi (पाथी) - About 3.5 kg of rice (volume varies by grain)
  • Mana (माना) - Varies regionally, typically 1/8 of a Pathi
  • Ser (सेर) - Used for both weight and volume measurements

Modern Standardization

Since 1956, India officially uses the metric system (SI units) for all official purposes. However, traditional units persist in daily use, especially in real estate, agriculture, and local markets. Our converter helps bridge these measurement systems for practical use.
